What is a two-stage juicer?

Simply, a two stage juicer has two "stages" or two steps - grinding, and pressing. The grinding step opens up the cells of the plants, and the pressing step is where the juice is actually extracted. All other juicing methods are a single step, whether it's a "slow" (masticating) juicer, centrifugal, or auger style. Only a two-stage juice press produces real cold-pressed juice, even if other juicer brands market themselves as "cold pressed".

The two step, grinding and pressing process creates excellent juice that is vibrant, highly nutritious, and great tasting. Pure Juicer launched their first product in 2018, and is manufactured in China.

Goodnature Hummingbird

Goodnature was established in 1976 when the founder invented the commercial cold press juicer. Since then, Goodnature has been the brand of choice for the best juice brands in the world, and even for Gerson institute healing centers that need to make large quantities of juice for their patients. Brands that use Goodnature include Whole Foods Market, Erewhon, Suja, Pressed Juicery, Hope 4 Cancer, and probably your favorite local juice bar. Until now, there hasn't been a Goodnature machine appropriate for use in one's home.

Hummingbird is the first Goodnature machine that offers the same great technology in a compact footprint and sleek design for home use. The XL model can even be used to run a bottled juice business, creating up to 60 12oz bottles of juice per hour.

Similarities

Let's start with what these two juice presses have in common.

Juice Quality

Both machines offer superb juice quality. The process of being a two stage juicer means that you are getting maximum nutrients and the most vibrant and great tasting juice possible. High Yield

Ease of Use

Goodnature Hummingbird is "Engineered for Enjoyment" with lots of thoughtful features to make the process more enjoyable, such as the press and walk-away feature and the fact that all food contact parts lift out of the machine by hand, leaving little to no residue left behind on the machine. Vertical vs Horizontal Design

Hummingbird is designed vertically, with the grinder above the press. This innovative design allows the produce to move from the grinder to the press automatically. Pure Juicer requires manually moving the produce from the grinder to the press, and folding it into a cloth bag.

Safety Features

Hummingbird contains a number of safety features. For example, the press is fully covered so no family members can accidently put their hand in it while it's operating. If the press cover is lifted during operation, the press automatically stops. Additionally Hummingbird features NSF certification which is an important health and safety standard. Pure Juicer does not contain these features.

Universal Grinder

Only Goodnature Hummingbird has a grinder that doesn't require reconfiguring or changing settings for various produce varieties, due to patent pending grinder technology. The Pure Juicer requires changing of "grids" which are basically metal screens with different size holes in them. There are twelve grids to choose from, so it takes a lot of knowledge and technique to get it right. Changing of grids also takes valuable time away from the juicing process.

Single Use vs Cloth Bags

Goodnature equipment features FreshFilter compostable press bags, made from tea bag material. These bags can be used once or a few times in a juicing session, then composted after use. That means no washing necessary, and no risk of contamination on future juicing sessions. Pure Juicer cloth bags made of polypropylene plastic require washing and sanitation, and even freezing the bags between uses to prevent bacteria growth.

Press and Walk Away

Goodnature Hummingbird is engineered is such a way that the press is fully automatic. Once you're finished grinding, press the button and you are free to do other things while the press is working. Size of Press

Hummingbird features a very large pressing chamber, so only one bag is needed to produce multiple bottles of juice. Pure Juicer has a smaller press, which requires folding and using multiple bags per pressing cycle to produce the maximum amount of juice.

Ease of Cleaning

Every part that comes in contact with food on Hummingbird can be removed by hand and washed in a dishwasher or sink. There are no hard-to-clean areas and no special cleaning tools needed. The Pure Juicer contains some hard-to-clean areas which require special care to prevent bacteria growth. It even comes with a stainless steel chopstick to clean a small, hard to clean area.

NSF Certification

NSF is a national food-safety certification that establishes standards for equipment used in commercial food and beverage preparation. Equipment that is NSF certified must adhere to strict rules about equipment being safe to use and easy to clean. Pure Juicer has not achieved this certification and does not meet the qualifications.

Display Screen

Hummingbird features a display screen which displays useful information during the juicing process. For example, there is a countdown timer showing how much longer is left in the pressing step. This allows the user to perform other tasks around the kitchen and know how much time is left before the next batch. Pure Juicer does not have a display.

Weight and Size

Pure Juicer weights about 65 lbs, which is quite heavy and hard to move around for the average person. Hummingbird weighs just 38 lbs when fully assembled, and less than 33 lbs when the removable parts have been removed. Don't get me wrong, it's still heavy but very reasonable for an average person to move it around and load it in and out of a cupboard. Pure juicer is wider than Hummingbird, taking up about four extra inches of counter space. Due to the vertical design, Hummingbird is taller than pure juicer but takes up less counter space.

Materials

The Pure Juicer machine itself is made from mostly stainless steel. The pusher is made from wood or plastic. The "RipStop" press bags that hold the produce are made from BPA free polypropylene thermoplastic. Hummingbird is made from stainless steel, aluminum, and BPA free transparent glass-like plastic. Hummingbird FreshFilter press bags are made from biodegradable PLA tea-bag material that is produced from renewable resources.
