Why We Think this is The Best Mixed Berry Smoothie Recipe

Mixed berry smoothies are pretty common and they usually taste great, but are they really good for you? Our simple recipe is truly next level when it comes to health benefits, plus it tastes amazing!

Mixed Berry Smoothie Health Benefits

  • It is loaded with antioxidants from blueberry, blackberry, elderberry, and pomegranate. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals in our bodies, and as a result may help strengthen our immune system and prevent unwanted inflammatory responses.
  • This smoothie is nutrient-dense:  Packed with vitamin C, vitamin K1, potassium, iron, calcium, healthy fiber, magnesium, folate and more!

A Healthy Breakfast

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”  We have heard this so many times, and we know its true, but why? Break-fast “breaks your (overnight) fast”, kickstarting your metabolism to boost your energy, alertness, and help you burn calorie calories throughout the day. Therefore, the healthier the breakfast, the better your day will be!

How To Make a Berry Smoothie

Is it ok to mix berries with milk? What kind of berries should be used in smoothies? These are all great questions when it comes to learning how to make a berry smoothie.

We like to use yogurt in our berry smoothie recipe, but if you don’t have any on hand you could use milk instead. If you want to make it vegan, just use non-dairy yogurt and swap the honey for maple syrup or agave nectar. We used both Greek yogurt and plant-based yogurt and both turned out great.

My favorite plant-based yogurt is Culina, a craft fermented, coconut-based yogurt that is super thick and creamy.

Health Benefits

  • antioxidant
  • supports immune system
  • reduces inflammation

Ingredients

blueberry (frozen) 3.5 oz 99 g 1/3 cup blueberries
blackberry (frozen) 2 oz 57 g 1/4 cup blackberries
yogurt (plain) 2 oz 57 g 1/4 cup yogurt
chia seeds 0.2 oz 6 g 1 1/2 teaspoons seeds
elderberry juice (unsweetened) 3 fl oz 89 ml about 1/3 cup juice
pomegranate arils 1 oz 28 g 2 tablespoons arils
honey (optional) 0.5 oz 14 g 2 teaspoons honey

Directions

  1. Blend all ingredients together in a high powered blender until desired consistency is reached. Take care not to over-blend.

  2. If your elderberry juice is sweetened or if you are substituting juice from another fruit, omit the honey.

Pro Tips

  • We tested a Greek yogurt and a plant-based yogurt in this recipe and both turned out great!

  • Elderberries are difficult to find fresh so we used a unsweetened elderberry juice, if you can only find the sweet version you can exclude the honey. If you don’t have elderberry juice, use the juice from another fruit like apple and omit the honey.

  • If using this recipe as a meal replacement, add in some protein powder.

  • Use plant-based yogurt and swap the honey for maple syrup or agave nectar to make it vegan.

  • Use this recipe as a base for a mixed berry smoothie bowl and add your own toppings like ripe bananas and fresh berries.
