Goodnature's X-1 is a complete, self-contained
pressing system, complete with its own pressing
module, grinder, and juice collection tray. The
compact electric-hydraulic unit requires only
a standard 110 volt electrical outlet, and provides
outputs up to 20 gallons per hour.
Juice connoisseurs in the Atlanta, Georgia area have
it good - So good, in fact, that maybe they've become
a little spoiled lately. They no longer have to go out
of their way to enjoy their favorite fresh fruit or
vegetable beverages. One entrepreneur saves them the
trouble. Arden's Garden, a micro-juicery operated by
Arden Zinn and son, Ed, got its start in the back room
of a natural food market. Their products, once offered
exclusively on the store's refrigerated shelves, are
now spilling out into the streets, offices, and homes
in upscale Buckhead.
Arden's
Garden insists upon producing a completely natural
product, offering over fifteen different fresh juices.
No additives of any kind are allowed. According to
Ed: "We won't use anything that is not a fruit or
vegetable - not even water is added to our product."
Walk-in customers liked what they tasted and fame
spread by word of mouth. "Pretty soon people were
asking if we could deliver to their offices or homes
and referrals started pouring in," says Ed.
Meets
pressing demand.
Increasing demand placed the Zinn's in a unique predicament.
Large, commercial pressing equipment not only carried
a heavy price tag; most machines were impractical
for producing the many, limited-run blends so popular
with customers. Home-style juice extractors on the
other hand, were incapable of handling enough volume
to satisfy the company's thirsty market.
In March
of 1994, the Zinn's discovered Goodnature's X-1
Juicing System. "It was the only commercial press
capable of producing our desired output while offering
the flexibility for filling our numerous special orders."
Ed notes. "The X-1 allowed us to expand quickly. Our
volume is now up over 10 times what it was before."
Another advantage from a health perspective: Many
nutritionists believe that fresh juices processed
on a hydraulic press retain twice the nutrients of
centrifuged juice.
Versatility an advantage.
"The thing about the X-1 which turned out to be such
a blessing in disguise - and which we weren't even
aware of at the beginning, was that it was so easy
to operate, with great versatility as far as what
you could do with it," he says. "Initially, we were
just looking for a larger scale carrot and apple juicer.
But as the business has grown and changed, and as
we've come up with new ideas, we've been able to adapt
the X-1 to whatever our needs are."
Current
offerings produced on the X-1 include over 15 different
fruit juices, including apple, cranberry, pear, pineapple,
grape, and various blends. Vegetable varieties include
anything from carrot or spinach, to "salad in a glass"
- a 10 vegetable combination. Ed notes: "In the case
of carrot juice, which accounts for over 25% of our
sales, people have commented on how completely free
of pulp it is." No secondary filtration is required.
Juices are bottled directly from the machine's catch
tray into unique glass jars ranging in size from 16
oz. to one gallon. Home or office deliveries alone
account for over 250 bottles per day in sales.
Reliability
and cleanliness count.
The X-1 has proven to be a reliable workhorse for
the Zinn's. "I can't imagine that there's an X-1 out
there that gets more use than this one: It's running
from 8 in the morning until 7 at night when we close
- and that's practically 6 days per week," according
to Ed. Sanitary conditions are also easier to maintain.
"It is very easy to clean up - 10 or 15 minutes to
rinse down and towel dry it at the end of the day,
and we're done. Filter bags are simply machine-washed,"
he says.
Goodnatured
Service. Ed adds: "Working with Goodnature has
been a most pleasant experience. I really like the
quality of the product, the service - and when we
were just getting started they spent a lot of time
with us. They were 'straight shooters.' If they don't
know something, they'll even say so, and then put
you in touch with people who do know - which is very
unusual. You don't run into that very often."
Versatility
". . . an easy machine to operate, with great versatility.
We've been able to adapt the X-1 to whatever our needs
are..."
